Jesus sailed

Friends:

As I’ve learned, folks on the “Island” like to sail. So did Jesus.

This Sunday and in the weeks ahead, Jesus is found in a boat, crossing the Sea of Galilee and its environs. In Mark’s gospel, which we’re reading sequentially on Sundays, each time Jesus is in a boat, it’s an allegorical message about the church. The biblical word for “boat” in Greek is “Navis,” which, of course, is where “Navy” comes from. More to the point, it is where the word “Nave” comes from: the interior of the church.

Most gothic church interiors, when looking up, are meant to evoke the interior of a ship; Trinity, not so much but you still get the idea. When in church, we’re all in the same boat—Christ’s boat—sailing the tempestuous sea. From the stern, Christ guides and navigates and stills the tempestuous sea.

To extend the allegory further, the church is a specific kind of “Navis”—an ark, as in Noah’s ark, offering protection and deliverance. As the great theologian and ethicist Reinhold Niebuhr quipped: “The Church is like Noah’s ark, the stench inside is tolerable because the storm outside is unbearable.”

The Rev. Timothy Safford, Interim Rector

Listening for God's voice in the Sunday morning Bible study

When we finish hear a scripture in church, the reader says, "Hear what the Spirit is saying to God's people." Through meditating on a passage of scripture, we hear God still speaking. This is the goal of the Sunday morning Bible Study which now meets in Honyman Hall each Sunday at , 9 a.m. Prepare by reading the passages in advance, here.
